The Church of St. Elijah
The Church of St. Elijah is located in the central marketplace in Bârlad. It was built by the furriers’ guild between 1859 and 1869. The church was built in the place of another
wooden church built between 1794 and 1795, which was completely destroyed in a fire. The uniqueness of this church is due to the fact it has the same architecture as the Cathedral in Belgrade. There are two gables on the two side apsides of the church and another one on the porch, at the entrance, each of them being supported by four Ionic columns over 8 meters high. The oil painting of the church was done later, in the late nineteenth century, being restored several times over the years.
